How To Build An Egg Drop Container With Straws

During an egg drop, you drop an uncooked egg from a specific height onto a mark below. Each egg is housed in a container built to protect and cushion the egg during its fall. You can build a container using a range of materials, including drinking straws, which can be arranged to provide cushion and protection to the egg.

Step 1

Cut six drinking straws into quarters. Place five of the quartered straws against each other to make a raft, or bed of straws. Secure the straws with masking tape.

Step 2

Set the taped straws flat on a table. Stand the remaining quartered straws up around the straw raft and tape them together. Also, attach the straws to the raft bottom to make a small cube of straws open on the top for resting the egg inside.

Step 3

Arrange five more straws in a pentagon shape. Tape the ends of the straws together. Make another pentagon, taping the ends of the straws together.

Step 4

Lay one pentagon on your work surface. Position a straw at each corner of the pentagon, standing upright, but angled in slightly. Tape the straws to the corner of the pentagon. Repeat with the second pentagon and five more straws.

Step 5

Set the cube in the middle of the pentagon and tape the ends of the upright straws to it. The cube will be slightly in the air. Tape the ends of the upright straws on the second pentagon to the top of the cube, making sure there is still room to put the egg inside the cube.

Step 6

Make 10 more pentagons out of straws. Line up the edge of one pentagon with the edge of the bottom pentagon, angling it slightly. Tape the pentagons together. Repeat with the remaining pentagons, taping five to the bottom pentagon and five to the top.

Step 7

Tape the edges of the pentagons attached to the bottom to the edges of the pentagons attached to the top. You will have a 12-sided figure with the egg cube in the center.
