Men wore sock garters under their trousers to hold their socks up. Women wear them to look stylish and draw attention to their legs. Sock garters are easy to make with a few simple notions. When they are no longer stylish, you can still wear them under your trousers to hold your socks up.

Make Garters

Measure around your leg above the wide part of your calf. Add 1 inch to this measurement. Cut two pieces of elastic this length.

Zig zag the ends of the elastic to prevent raveling. Fold down half an inch on one side of the elastic. Stitch across the folded elastic a quarter inch from the fold.

Slide a lingerie hook onto the other end of the elastic. Fold down half an inch of the end of the elastic to hold the hook in place. Sew across the elastic close to the hook. Make the other garter in the same way. Fasten the garters around your legs by sliding the hook into the loop on the other end of the garter. The garters can be worn at this point to hold up socks that come up to your knee. Attach garter clasps to hold up shorter socks.

Add Garter Clasps

Cut four pieces of elastic 4 1/2 inches long. Zig zag the ends of the elastic to prevent raveling. Fold down 1 1/2 inches on one side of the elastic. Stitch across the folded elastic 1 inch from the fold.

Slide a garter clasp onto the other end of the elastic. Fold down 1/2 inch of the end of the elastic to hold the hook in place. Sew across the elastic close to the hook. Make the other garter clasp attachments in the same way.

Slide two garter clasp attachments onto each garter. Position one on each side of your leg. Attach the clasps to either side of your socks.
