How to Solve Math Equations

By William D. Gardlock
Rounding decimals is important

All mathematics is based on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The following article will give you a step-by-step explanation on how to solve each.

Learn how to add. Take 2 + 2. An easy way to look at this problem is to say that you have two apples and your friend has two apples. If you both put your apples together, how many will you have? The answer is 4.

Learn how to subtract. Take 4 - 2. Remember the example in the first problem? You and your friend combined your apples so you had four apples. Now, your friend wants to take back his two apples. How many does that leave you with? The answer is 2. Subtraction takes away from the first number.

Learn how to multiply. Take 4 x 2. All you want to do is add four two times (4 + 4). The answer is 8. Lets try with 5 x 5. In essence, this is 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5. Your answer is 25.

Learn how to divide. Take 8 / 2. What this means is that we want to divide the 8 into two parts. If you had 8 hot dogs and wanted to divide then into two equal parts, how many would you have in each group? The answer is 4.Let's try one more. Take 15 / 3. Simply, we want to divide 15 into 3 equal parts. The answer is 5.
