How To Calculate Average Volume

Volume is a measurement of how much space is occupied by a substance. An average is a mathematical mean of a set of numbers, which you find by adding the numbers and dividing the total by the number of measurements involved. You might be required to find an average volume as a part of a middle school or high school math or science class. This type of calculation could be useful when recording volume measurements that are subject to variation, such as in the case of a rain gauge or lab beaker.

Step 1

Record multiple measurements of volume.

Step 2

Add the measurements. For instance, you might have recorded the following measurements in terms of milliliters: 25, 40, 30 , and 35. You would add these numbers for a total of 130 milliliters.

Step 3

Divide the total from step two by the number of measurements you used. In this example, you would divide 130 by 4 to get an average volume of 32.5 milliliters.
