The Best Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Schools

In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked the top colleges and universities in the nation in the field of chemical engineering. The top tier of the 278 schools surveyed included Stanford University, California Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Texas Austin, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Ranked first on the list for the 21st consecutive year on the U.S. News and World Report listing for both the graduate and undergraduate programs, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of the most prestigious chemical engineering programs in the nation. Producing CEOs, award winners and professors, MIT is widely known as setting the standard for research and training in the specialty of chemical engineering. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, MIT offers three undergraduate programs in chemical engineering, including a program focusing on the emerging biotech and life sciences industry. The chemistry programs also offer joint programming with MIT's Sloan School of Management, allowing students to gain a business perspective.

University of California, Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley has a long history of churning out leaders and scholars. In 2010 it was ranked second on the U.S. News & World Report list of chemical engineering schools. One of only three schools in the nation to combine the disciplines of chemistry and chemical engineering, UC Berkeley integrates both research and education. Students can study thermodynamics, electrochemical processes, fluid mechanics and polymer processing. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with options in biotechnology, environmental technology or applied physical science. Undergraduates can also find double majors in chemical engineering and materials science or nuclear engineering.

University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

Ranked in the top tier of chemical engineering schools by U.S. News & World Report is the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. The Twin Cities campus is located in Minneapolis and consists of more than 400 undergraduates in chemical engineering and materials science. As a chemical engineering major, students learn the science and principles of aspects of the science: balance of material and energy, thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and process dynamics and control. Students gain a mix of course work and laboratories. Research is a main component of education in the fields of biotechnology, ceramics and metals, interfacial engineering, crystal growth and design, and polymers.
